The wonderful thing about SmartPoint­s is the flexibilit­y, which means that you can enjoy all your favourite summer treats, as long as you stick to your overall allowance.

That includes barbecues — so to get your mouth watering, let’s start with some special summer recipes that you can enjoy while still losing weight . . .

5 SMARTPOINT­S Spicy turkey burger Serves 1

CRUSH 1 garlic clove, place in a bowl, then mix with ½ a chopped bird’s eye chilli, 1/8 tsp each ground coriander and cumin and 1 tsp lemon juice.

add 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander and 100g turkey mince. Use your hands to combine and shape into a patty.

Barbecue (or grill) for 5 minutes on each side, or until cooked, and serve with chopped lettuce drizzled with 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce.

9 SMARTPOINT­S Lamb and feta burger Serves 1

PLACE 100g lean (less than 16 % fat) lamb mince in a bowl with a finely chopped shallot, ½ tbsp finely chopped fresh mint and a little salt and pepper.

Use your hands to squeeze this together to make a thin, flat shape. Place 15g crumbled reduced-fat feta onto the middle of the meat and fold over the sides to enclose the cheese and form a patty.

Thread 100g small cooked potatoes onto a skewer with chunks of red pepper and onion. Mist with calorie- controlled cooking spray.

Barbecue (or grill) the burger and kebab for around 10 minutes, or until cooked, turning occasional­ly.

4 SMARTPOINT­S Sticky Chinese-style chicken drumsticks Serves 6

To Make the marinade, pour 330ml diet cola into a saucepan, carefully bring to the boil, then simmer for 5-10 minutes until halved in volume. Tip into a large nonmetalli­c mixing bowl and allow to cool, before stirring in 3 crushed garlic cloves, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger, 2 tsp Chinese five spice powder, 1 tbsp clear honey and 2 tbsp tomato purée.

Then, take 12 skinless chicken drumsticks and slash each a couple of times with a knife before adding to the marinade. leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight in the fridge.

Slowly cook on the barbecue, turning frequently until cooked through, basting as you go, which should take around 25 minutes. Serve immediatel­y.

9 SMARTPOINT­S Oriental fish Serves 1

MIX together 1 tsp sesame oil, ½ tbsp soy sauce, juice and zest of ½ lime, 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar, 1 tsp grated fresh ginger and 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander.

Slash each side of 1 x 400g sea bream two or three times with a sharp knife. next, rub the marinade into the fish and leave for a couple of hours in a cool place or in the fridge. Barbecue for 7 minutes on each side, or until the fish is cooked through.

Serve the hot fish with a salad made from 20g rice noodles, cooked according to pack instructio­ns, cooled, then mixed through with chopped fresh coriander, grated carrot, thin strips of red pepper, mangetout, spring onion and a few water chestnuts.
