£90m Adele to sign biggest ever deal by UK musician

- By Tammy Hughes

ADELE is to sign a £90million record deal – the biggest ever landed by a British musician, it was claimed last night.

The 28-year-old singer’s deal with Sony will top the £80million given to Robbie Williams in 2002.

‘We’ve secured Adele who is without doubt the biggest music star in a generation. This is massive,’ a Sony source told The Sun.

The deal for Adele, from Tottenham in North London, smashes the £70million given to Whitney Houston for Arise, the previous highest for a female artist.

Adele’s latest album, 2 , broke first-week sales records in both the UK and US when it was released last November.

It sold 17.4million copies last year, with 2. million of them bought in Britain.

Her success marked the eighth time in the past 11 years the glo-

bal bestseller has come from the UK. Adele, whose worth was valued at £8 million before this latest record deal, was named songwriter of the year at the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting awards on Thursday but was too busy to collect the prize.

She sent a video message from Germany, where she is on tour.

She said: ‘I won on my last album as well so to win on this one is a dream. I was secretly pregnant then so I couldn’t enjoy the night as well. But cheers, bottoms up, enjoy.’

Adele has been with her partner Simon Konecki since 2011 and their son Angelo was born in 2012. The Brit School graduate’s debut album, 19, went seventimes platinum in the UK. She also recorded the title track for James Bond film Skyfall in 2012.

A Sony spokesman declined to comment last night.
