The humane way

-

I HAVE just come back from the hospital where my 72-yearold sister is living out her last days. She has an inoperable brain tumour, diabetes, dementia and has just had a stroke. They tried to put a tube into her nose to feed her, but she pulled it out.

So, they have bound her hands and re- inserted the tube. We were told this was procedure. This will increase her suffering to extend a life that should be allowed to end.

What is the matter with the world when an animal would not be treated like this?

The doctors are just carrying out the letter of the law, but surely a quick injection to end her suffering would be more humane? As with my mother and mother-in-law, I can merely sit and look at my sister, feeling completely helpless. This will possibly be me one day, which I would not want.

On a practical note, how many hospital beds could be freed up if we allowed euthanasia for people who are in the late stages of a terminal illness?
