Mark Newton-Jones, 47 Chief executive, Mothercare

MOTHERCARE boss Mark Newton-Jones, 47, saw his pay package jump to £ 814,000 from £774,000, according to the latest annual report.

The rise in pay comes as the pram and baby retailer showed strong signs of recovery after a difficult few years. Newton- Jones was hired to turn the business around and it made its first profit in five years last month.

The chief executive, who grew up in a retailing family and says he was on the shop floor of the family wholesaling business aged 12, was paid a salary of £600,000 but did not hit targets for a bonus and longterm incentive plan for the period.
