MAGYARS ARE MIGHTY ONCE MORE!

-

HUNGARY’S 2-0 victory over rivals Austria evoked memories of their Mighty Magyars side who reached the World Cup final in 1954. Sportsmail looks at how the current crop compare with Hungary’s Golden Team.

PYJAMA MAN v BLACK PANTHER

NOW they have ‘Pyjama Man’ Gabor Kiraly — who team-mate Zoltan Gera claims even sleeps in his trademark grey jogging bottoms — in goal but in the 1950s they had the Black Panther. Wearing an all-black kit, Gyula Grosics helped Hungary stay unbeaten from 1950 until defeat by West Germany in the 1954 World Cup final. His tendency to rush off his line has also seen him regarded as the first sweeperkeeper. While Kiraly, at 40, is the Euros’ oldest player, Grosics (right) started a friendly for Ferencvaros against Sheffield United aged 82!

TOP SCORER OF THE CENTURY

IT’S fair to say modernday Hungary aren’t blessed with attacking prowess — Adam Szalai ended a run of 39 games without a goal when he scored against Austria. It’s a far cry from Ferenc Puskas, who scored 84 goals in 85 caps, won three European Cups with Real Madrid and was named top scorer of the 20th century.

HAT-TRICK HERO

AT their peak, Hungary went to Wembley in 1953 and thrashed England 6-3 with midfielder Nandor Hidegkuti scoring a hat-trick. These days it’s former West Brom and Fulham man Gera, 37, who they call upon to add a touch of class.
