BACKGROUND: The daughter of a garage owner in Nottinghamshire, she went to grammar school before graduating with a degree in law from Birmingham University. Single mother of two daughters.
WORK EXPERIENCE: TV broadcaster, appearing on Grampian TV and Granada TV’s This Morning in the late 1980s. Switched to law and was called to the Criminal Bar Association in 1995. She has served as the minister for veterans as well as the minister for small business.
KNOWN FOR: Expressive face and potty mouth. She was accused by Labour of calling Ed Miliband a ‘sanctimonious c***’ in the Commons chamber. She strongly denied this and said she had accused him of talking ‘sanctimonious rubbish’.

BACKGROUND: Born into a working-class family in Liverpool where her dad was a bus driver. Grew up on a council estate and her family benefited from Margaret Thatcher’s right to buy scheme. Single mother of three daughters.
WORK EXPERIENCE: A former nurse, she also set up a child care centre and was a director of Bupa before working as an adviser to then shadow chancellor Oliver Letwin. Backbench MP for MidBedfordshire since 2005. Lucrative sideline as a novelist.
KNOWN FOR: Getting into trouble with party whips by going awol and then appearing on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! Pushing for abortion limits to be brought down.
