KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB
BARGAIN OF THE WEEK Tiger Horse Shiraz Mourvedre, £5 (normally £6.50), Sainsbury’s ONE of this summer’s best value barbecue-friendly reds. Made in South Africa from a blend of two grapes, it’s a joyously simple, earthy red that packs in a whole lot of flavour for a fiver. Cheap wines are not always this cheerful. WHITE WINE L’Arjolle Sauvignon Blanc/ Viognier, £6.99, Booths SAUVIGNON Blanc is normally centre stage but here it’s got a support act in Viognier. Together they’ve created a wine with classic Sauvignon citrus fruit flavours along with a generous dollop of Viognier voluptuousness. Ripe, round and moreish, this is a tropical fruit-flavoured gem from the Languedoc.
Food pairing: Roast chicken. RED WINE Extra Special Nero d’Avola Syrah 2015, £5, Asda SICILY is one of my favourite places for finding great value, under- the- radar wines. Usually stuffed with character, this one’s true to form. Made from Sicily’s star red grape, Nero d’Avola, it’s also got some peppery Syrah in the blend too. It’s a baby (so young!) but it’s quite the bruiser, loaded with juicy, black cherry fruits.
Food pairing: Dirty burgers. SPARKLING WINE Cremant de Limoux, £11.95, Berry Bros LIKE Champagne, this Limoux wine gets its bubbles from a second bottle fermentation. But the blend is quite different, bringing together local grapes like Mauzac and Chenin Blanc, along with Chardonnay. Fresh, lemony and full of toasty flavours.
Food pairing: Fish and chips.
