ROY’S FLAWED FAREWELL
ROY HODGSON left his post as England coach because of results and that’s the way it should be. His hadn’t been good enough and he should have been asked to leave after the World Cup in Brazil two years ago. However, another example of his unsuitability for the job came after he resigned. Having read out a statement immediately after the defeat by Iceland, Hodgson woke up the next morning under pressure to face the media one last time. Hodgson did not want to do that and felt he should not have to front up. But the fact that he eventually acquiesced and rather grumpily sat down in front of the press in Chantilly told us everything we needed to know. An England manager needs to know his own mind and have the courage of his convictions, no matter who it upsets. But even on his way to the door, Hodgson didn’t manage to meet either of these criteria and that was very telling.
