So who could replace him?

- SUZANNE EVANS: ODDS 4/1

THESE are the favourites to replace Nigel Farage as Ukip leader.

PAUL NUTTALL: ODDS 9/4

A favourite who could help the party win Labour votes, he is a former history lecturer who once played semi-professional football. Mr Nuttall, 39, is an MEP for NorthWest England who has been Ukip’s deputy leader since 2010.

STEVEN WOOLFE: ODDS 9/4

A key ally of Mr Farage, 48-yearold Mr Woolfe is an MEP for NorthWest England. As Ukip’s migration and financial affairs spokesman, he is seen as a strong contender. Ukip’s former deputy chairman, 51, has already been leader once – for three days – after Mr Farage temporarily resigned. But she was given a six-month suspension in March after falling out with the outgoing leader. This means she is currently not able to stand, but she is fighting to be reinstated.

DOUGLAS CARSWELL: ODDS 8/1

A former Conservative, the party’s sole MP has insisted he will not stand for the leadership. The 45-year-old politician has not seen eye-to-eye with Mr Farage since joining Ukip in 2014, and responded to his resignation yesterday by tweeting a smiley face.

DIANE JAMES: ODDS 8/1

Ukip’s deputy chairman, 5 , was given a prominent role in the referendum, appearing on the first major TV debate on the BBC. She is an MEP for South-East England and Ukip’s home affairs spokesman.

PATRICK O’FLYNN: ODDS 8/1

Former journalist Mr O’Flynn, 50, is an MEP for the East of England. Last year he stepped down from his role as Ukip’s economics spokesman and apologised for claiming Mr Farage had become ‘snarling, thin-skinned and aggressive’.
