5 OF THE BEST WATERS

-

there’S no doubt that the healthiest way to stay hydrated is with a simple glass of water, but if you want something with a bit extra what’s the smartest choice? here dietitian Sian Porter chooses five of the best.

Ugly Unsweet Water Lemon & Lime

99p for 330ml can. Per 330ml can: Calories, 0, sugar, 0g, salt, 0g THIS is sparkling water infused with citrus oils from the skins of lemons and limes. This means the water is lightly flavoured but has zero calories, sugar, sweeteners or salt. There is a trace of citric acid, added as a natural preservative, which can erode teeth, but it is in a very small amount and this drink is much kinder to your teeth than standard fizzy drinks.

Innocent Bubbles Tropical

£1.29 for 330ml can. Per 330ml can: Calories, 97, sugar, 19.5g; salt, 0g ONE can of this contains one portion of fruit juice (one of your five-a-day) diluted with lightly sparkling water in a can. It contains onethird less sugar than a 300ml bottle of pure fruit juice. Drink with a straw and all in one go to minimise the fruit sugar contact with your teeth.

Highland Spring sparkling

55p for 500ml bottle. Per 250ml glass: Calories 0; sugar, 0g; salt, 0.01g SPARKLING water varies hugely in the amount of minerals it contains, and this includes the amount of sodium. In the UK we consume far more sodium (salt) than we need — typically 3.2g (equivalent to 8.1g salt) a day versus the recommended 2.4g (6g salt). Highland Spring Sparkling Water has one of the lowest levels, at just 0.014g per litre.

Virtue Sparkling Energy Berries

£1.35 for 250ml can. Per 250 ml can: Calories, 0; sugar, 0g; salt, 0g THIS is a form of energy drink, that delivers 80 mg of caffeine — the equivalent of a mug of tea or instant coffee — without sugar or calories. The caffeine is provided in part by the addition of extracts of guarana, a South American berry that contains twice as much caffeine as coffee beans and yerba mate, another south American plant. It also contains ‘natural caffeine’, that is extracted from other sources.

Get More Vitamin D mango & Passion Fruit

£1.45 for 500ml bottle. Per 250ml glass: Calories, 7; sugar, 0.25g; salt, 0g VITAMIN D is important for healthy bones, but in the UK levels are low as we can only produce it from sunlight between April and September. We are advised to have 10 micrograms a day — and that is what you would get from a 500ml bottle of this — which is essentially water fortified with Vitamin D.
