Murray: It isn’t just about Ivan

- MIKE DICKSON

ANDY MURRAY has dismissed suggestions that either the Davis Cup side or his own personal support staff are one-man teams. The 29-year-old Scot has yet to come to a formal agreement with his head coach Ivan Lendl about their schedule but insists they are relaxed because of the rest of the group already in place. Murray will today face Spain’s world No 45 Marcel Granollers in the US Open second round, having disposed of Lukas Rosol with supreme ease on Tuesday night, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. ‘Ivan knows how much time it takes to do the job properly,’ said the world No 2. ‘I said I’d be happy to come to him for some training blocks, but I haven’t spoken to him about a length of time.’ The Wimbledon champion is keen to stress the part played by Jamie Delgado. ‘I’m happy with Jamie when Ivan’s not there. That’s why the rest of my team is extremely important — without them, Ivan couldn’t do the job he does.’ Murray also believes it will help GB in their Davis Cup semi-final against Argentina that there is a genuine selection dilemma for Leon Smith, given the form of Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund. ‘For the opposition it is a little bit harder to prepare if you don’t know who you are going to play against. Leon could potentially pick three singles players and Jamie (Murray) for doubles.’
