Nursery rhyme for our time

- Roger J. Meredith, Blairgowrie, Perthshire.

The owl and the pussycat went to sea, In a beautiful, customised yacht. The sort of ship that screamed to the world, Just how much money they’d got, they’d got, Just how much money they’d got. They took some hash, and cartloads of cash, In a sea chest built from copper. It took those two, and five of the crew, To lift aboard that whopper. Yes it took those two and five of the crew, To lift on board that whopper. They dined on lobster, and occasional steak, With caviar just for a break, a break, With caviar just for a break. So they sailed away for a year and a day, To the land where the poppies abound, They had lots of fun, buying drugs by the ton, Stowing them where they might not be found, be found, And stowing them where they might not be found. They sailed on to Peru, as most drug barons do, Where owl bought a ring of pure gold. He then married his puss, with a minimum of fuss, An act which left pussy quite cold, quite cold, An act which left pussy quite cold. The captain of the yacht was raised from his cot, To marry that fabulous pair. Rubbing sleep from his eyes, he swore in their ties, With a hope of a love they might share, might share, With a hope of a love they might share. They popped open the champagne and gorged from their hampers, A great party was thrown for the crew, They drank to the health and continued great wealth, Of that fabulous, generous, two. Of that fabulous, generous, two. While the party was swinging, all dancing and singing, A corvette pulled alongside. They arrested the crew and the fabulous two, Just as Owl was toasting his bride, his bride, As Owl was toasting his bride. So they got their comeuppance, their lives weren’t worth tuppence. Their futures weren’t worth a dime. They’d be jailed for life, both Owl and his wife, They’ll be apart for a very long time, long time, They’ll be apart for a very long time.
