Gran died after botched op

-

GRANDMOTHER Ena Dickinson died at the hands of an ‘out of depth’ German surgeon.

The 9 -year-old lost nearly half her blood during what should have been a routine hip operation.

One expert witness told an inquest that her death in August 2008 was the ‘worst case of negligence’ he had ever come across.

German doctor Werner Kolb had been hired by Grantham Hospital in Lincolnshire but was not used to performing hip operations. He had only carried out a small number and had been mainly lecturing in the four years before the incident.

During the surgery he cut the wrong muscle, severed an artery and did not even use the correct tools, the inquest in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, heard in 2010.

At one point he became so flustered in the operating theatre that he started speaking German and another doctor had to intervene.

Mrs Dickinson was left unable to walk and developed pneumonia before dying six weeks later. Dr Kolb has since returned to Germany.
