Sweet fans bitter as Quality Street axes toffee deluxe

THE toffee deluxe has been a muchloved staple in tins of Quality Street – tugging at the nation’s teeth and fillings – for 80 years.

Now Nestle has angered a nation of sweet lovers by dropping it in favour of a modern, lighter, honeycomb crunch.

The treat was created in 1919 and included in one of the first boxes of Quality Street, which appeared on shelves in 1936.

It has been at the heart of the assortment ever since, a mainstay of Christmas and cause of many family wrangles. Yet, Nestle has pulled it, while allowing other less popu- lar chocolates, such as the strawberry delight and orange cream, to remain.

If the firm hoped the change would go unnoticed, it could not have been more wrong. One Twitter critic wrote: ‘First Bran- gelina then GBBO (Great British Bake Off) now toffee deluxe has gone from Quality Street #christmasw­ontbethesa­me’.

Another asked: ‘Why not get rid of the strawberry and orange creams?’ Yasmin MacKenzie wrote: ‘Hey Nestle, what on earth is this? What happens to the toffee deluxe? That was the best toffee in your Quality Street!’ Sweet fan Lauren Hooker added: ‘Please bring back the toffee deluxe Quality Street. My godfather and brother are rather distressed.’

Nestle claims the decision is in response to customer complaints there are too many toffees in the tins and boxes.

A spokesman added: ‘We have introduced the honeycomb crunch to celebrate Quality Street’s 80th birthday and also as a reaction to public opinion. We went out and conducted surveys about what people wanted, their response was here was too much toffee so the decision was to make a change.’
