CYCLAMEN CYCLAMEN CILICIUM

-

WILD cyclamen have long been garden favourites. The toughest, autumn-blooming C. hederifolium and late-winter flowering C. coum are among the hardiest of plants. But here’s a lovely alternative for late autumn. Turkish species Cyclamen cilicium (left) has neatly rounded, beautifully marked leaves that last all winter. Just before they emerge, the first pale pink flowers appear. As with all cyclamen, the petals are swept back and slightly twisted. Grow C. cilicium in sun or part shade, in free-draining, humus-rich soil. The tubers are vulnerable to frost, so choose a warm, sheltered spot.
