PEARS FOR LITTLE GARDENS ‘PeARS for your heirs’ was my grandfather’s favourite saying, suggesting that pear trees were long-term projects.

I can remember massive trees needing ladders for pickers. But not any more. The nursery Lubera offers Pironi varieties, which are bred for compactness.

Little Sweety is a green pear which, it claims, will grow little more than 150cm high in 25 years and is sweet enough to be eaten when freshly picked.
