Cycling’s golden couple expecting their first baby

- By Alisha Rouse

OLYMPIC cycling champions Laura and Jason Kenny have announced they are expecting a baby.

Mrs Kenny, 24, shared the news with her 153,000 Instagram followers by posting a picture of the golden couple’s bicycles next to a child’s balance bike. Their families are said to be ‘thrilled’.

The cyclists married in an intimate ceremony in September, weeks after both won gold medals in Rio.

Millions of viewers saw them share an impromptu kiss on live TV after winning events within 90 minutes of each other.

Luke-Lloyd Davies, who represents the couple, said: ‘I can confirm that Laura Kenny is indeed pregnant and that she, Jason and their respective families are absolutely thrilled and delighted with the news. They very much appreciate all the kind wishes and messages of support they have received already.’ Friends and fans were quick to congratulate the young couple, with fellow cyclist Dani King calling it the ‘best news ever’.

While the balance bike in the picture they posted may be for beginners, it’s unlikely the child of championship cyclists will need stabilisers for very long. Mrs Kenny has already hinted that their child could follow in their wheel tracks. During the Rio Olympics she wrote on Twitter: ‘I love him to bits @JasonKenny107! Our kids have to get some of these genes right?’

The couple met in 2011, but Mrs Kenny – then Laura Trott – admitted that their romance did not blossom until just before London 2012.

Following his Rio victory, Kenny, 28, admitted: ‘The best thing about is that we get to come away together and race together. Not many couples in the Olympic village can enjoy their success together. So that’s really special and I feel really lucky about that.’

Kenny has won six Olympic gold medals and his wife four. To add to their medal haul, both have been honoured by the Queen. Mrs Kenny was made an OBE in 2013 and both received CBEs this year. They are expected to compete in the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
