Doctor ‘groped woman patient in A&E cubicle’

- By James Tozer

AN A&E doctor groped a 65-year-old patient’s breasts while making grunting noises, a medical tribunal heard.

Dr Joel Danjuma, 61, said ‘ugh’ and ‘ahh’ as he fondled the woman, who had gone to hospital with shoulder pain, as he examined her in a cubicle, it was claimed.

But when the patient’s daughter arrived to take her home, Dr Danjuma gave the daughter a high five, it was said.

The woman was at first too frightened to report the doctor but later told her family. Dr Danjuma later told police he ‘categorically’ denied her allegation.

The alleged incident occurred in June 2012 after the woman, identified as Patient A, went to Milton Keynes General Hospital with pain in her right shoulder.

She was taken into a cubicle, and before being treated by Bulgarian-trained Dr Danjuma, was advised by nurses to remove her bra as she might need an X-ray. But Patient A told the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Serv- ice in Manchester: ‘When I first saw the doctor, he said to me, “What gives you the right to think I’m going to send you for an X-ray?”’

He then told her to lie on her side, she said. The woman added: ‘He pulled my top up as far as he could. He got hold of my breast and he started playing with it and squeezing and kneading. He was making “ugh” noises and I was in tears. I tried to push him away.’

Patient A said Dr Danjuma then fondled her other breast, while not saying anything, before being ‘ abrupt and rude’ after the alleged assault, simply saying ‘ Sit up, pull your top down’.

He left the cubicle when the woman’s friend arrived, she said, adding: ‘My friend asked me if I was ok but I was scared and in shock. You think, has this really happened to you?’

She said her daughter then arrived and Dr Danjuma gave her tablets to give to her mother. Patient A added that when her daughter said ‘I’m going to look after her’, Dr Danjuma answered: ‘Okay give me a high five.’

Patient A said she felt ‘really upset’, adding: ‘I thought I was in good hands. I felt really dirty because I hadn’t stopped him. This has changed my life.’

The woman said she was too scared to leave home for five weeks because she feared Dr

‘Shocked by his behaviour’

Danjuma had found out where she lived and might be outside.

After she told her family, police quizzed the doctor on suspicion of sexual assault but took no action and the case was referred to the General Medical Council.

Kathryn Johnson, for the GMC, said: ‘Patient A said she felt shocked by Dr Danjuma’s behaviour and didn’t know what to do. She knew what was happening was not right but was intimidated by Dr Danjuma.

‘The high five may be significant. You may find it odd for the doctor to behave like this.’

The medical register states he is currently barred from carrying out consultations with female patients except in emergencies.

Dr Danjuma, from Broughton, Milton Keynes, who is understood to be suspended from his role at the hospital, denies sexually motivated misconduct. The hearing continues.
