Mail’s 13 nominations for Press Oscars
THE Daily Mail has been shortlisted in a host of categories for the prestigious annual Press Awards.
The newspaper has a total of 13 nominations in what are known as the Oscars of British journalism.
Stanley McMurtry, otherwise known as Mac, is once again in the running for Cartoonist of the Year, while Dominic Lawson and Peter Oborne have both been shortlisted for Columnist of the Year. Frances Hardy and Kathryn Knight are up for the prize of Interviewer of the Year.
Richard Pendlebury is nominated for Feature Writer of the Year, for work including vivid dispatches from the frontline in Syria and Iraq. Defence Correspondent Larisa Brown is shortlisted for Specialist Journalist of the Year after this paper’s campaign to end the witch hunt against British soldiers accused of mistreating civilians in Iraq.
The same campaign – which achieved its aim earlier this month – is also in the running for the Cudlipp Award, which recognises excellence in popular journalism
Martha Kelner and Matt Lawton are both nominated for Sports Journalist of the Year, for exposing the bullying and uncovering the drugs crisis in British cycling. Sean Poulter is shortlisted for Environment Journalist of the Year, for this paper’s successful campaign to ban toxic plastic microbeads from common household products, while Andy Hooper is nominated for Sports Photographer of the Year.
The Mail has also been nominated for Front Page of the Year for its image of a jubilant Mo Farah along with the headline ‘On Top of the World’ after the last day of the Rio Olympics.
The winners of the Society of Editors’ National Press awards for 2016 will be announced at a ceremony in central London on March 14.
