Did Justin Welby really link Brexit to fascism?
I’M VERY concerned at the Archbishop of Canterbury’s apparent attempt to link support for Brexit and the election of President Trump with ‘fascism’. He appears to hold anyone who doesn’t share his opinions in utter contempt. It would seem Justin Welby’s privileged background makes him part of the liberal elite, which arrogantly presumes the public is too uneducated or ignorant to contribute to the national debate. Those who want to subvert the Brexit process will use any means they deem necessary, including demonising anyone who stands in their way. It’s interesting that the Remain campaign is largely silent about the barrage of abusive and threatening messages sent to former Ukip leader Nigel Farage. Shouting ‘Fascist!’ at someone is bullying, student union-style politics, designed to intimidate people and to shut down dialogue. It’s well-known to have been used by fascist and communist states. I VOTED for Brexit and certainly wouldn’t join in the demonisation of Donald trump, but we shouldn’t misunderstand or misrepresent the archbishop of Canterbury’s presidential address to the synod. If you read what Justin Welby said, you will see he’s saying the opposite of what he’s being accused of. he tells us you cannot simplistically explain Brexit and trump as being expressions of fascist or populist tendencies. Welby is telling us it’s far more complex than those commentators would have you believe, and that the effects of globalisation have a lot to answer for in the way in which the lives of ordinary people have been affected.
