Boneheads! Now pop upstarts parody the PM at Brit Awards
SHE once branded herself as the all-American girl for whom butter wouldn’t melt.
But Katy Perry’s performance at the Brits was a far cry from her old style of wholesome pop – as she attempted to make a political statement.
The US star danced alongside crude burning skeletons dressed as Theresa May and Donald Trump as she performed her latest song Chained To The Rhythm last night.
The figures appeared to hold hands – a reference to when Mr Trump held Mrs May’s hand as they walked down steps in Washington last month – before exploding into flames.
The skeletons were surrounded by small dancing white houses – perhaps reminding the audience of the politicians’ White House meeting.
Miss Perry, 32, who performed alongside Bob Marley’s grandson Skip, was a dedicated supporter of Hillary Clinton and has been critical of Mr Trump since his election. Big winners of last night’s glitzy awards ceremony, held at London’s O2 arena, were Adele and Beyonce, who won best female solo artist, and international female artist respectively.
Adele, 28, became the undisputed queen of music last year after winning four awards in one night – taking her total Brit Awards tally to eight.
This year she has added another to her haul, scooping the Brits global success award. David Bowie was the other star of the night, being posthumously honoured with two awards – British male solo artist and MasterCard British album for Blackstar.
Michael C Hall, who starred in the singer’s musical Lazarus, collected the first award, while Bowie’s screenwriter son Duncan Jones accepted the second on his behalf.
Little Mix, who started out on the X Factor in 2011, won British single for catchy pop ballad Shout Out to My Ex, while international male solo artist was won by Drake.
Bastille, Biffy Clyro, Little Mix and Radiohead lost out to The 1975, who won best British group. International group went to A Tribe Called Quest.
British breakthrough act went to blues singer Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, whose real name is Rory Graham, 32, and who has been performing since the age of 19.
The star-studded evening also saw live performances from Robbie Williams, Bruno Mars, and Emeli Sande, who also won female solo artist.
