MEMBERS of the Metropolitan Police Women’s Patrols are being employed as detectives, an interesting innovation. They will not take the place of men detectives. Their services as plain-clothes officers will be used only in cases where their sex will be an advantage in making inquiries.

ANOTHER ex- Cambridge University satirist made his British television debut last night. He is John Cleese, the tall, dark, young man in David Frost’s show. ‘I can’t see myself in show business in three years’ time,’ he says. His interest is international politics. ‘Satire,’ says he, ‘is too simpleminded. I’ll end up back with politics . . .’

JOHN BARROWMAN, 50. The former star of Doctor Who spin- off Torchwood has marked this milestone by cutting off his dyed brown hair to reveal grey locks (pictured). The Glasgow-born actor grew up in the U. S., returning to Britain in 1989 where he got his big break opposite elaine Paige in Cole Porter musical Anything Goes.
NIGEL LAWSON, 85. The former Chancellor of the exchequer, now lord lawson of Blaby, was chairman of the Vote leave campaign. He is father of celebrity cook nigella and Mail columnist Dominic. In the nineties, he lost 5st and published The nigel lawson Diet Book.
BORN ON THIS DAY
ANTON YELCHIN ( 1989- 2016). The Russian-born American actor died, aged 27, after being pinned to a wall by his own Jeep. Best known for playing Chekov in the Star Trek film franchise, he was the son of Soviet ice ballet dancers who emigrated to the U.S. just after his birth.
HELEN ROLLASON (19561999). The ex-Pe teacher ( pictured) was the first woman to anchor BBC sports programme Grandstand. She died of cancer at 43, after raising £5 million for a hospital wing. She endured 50 chemotherapy sessions but did not miss a day’s work, saying: ‘I feel best on the days I’m busy.’
