Leicester land cup thanks to boot of Burns
FREDDIE BURNS kicked 11 points to help Leicester Tigers claim their first trophy since 2013 with an Anglo-Welsh Cup final win over Exeter Chiefs. The No 10 kicked three penalties and a conversion at The Stoop as the Tigers became the first side to secure three AngloWelsh titles, following their successes in 2007 and 2012. ‘It was nice to put some silverware in the cabinet,’ said Burns, who will leave the Tigers for Bath at the season’s end. ‘It was a tough day by placekicking into the wind.’ Burns’ contribution with the boot was complemented by Tom Brady, who touched down for the Tigers. Exeter hit back as James Short and Sam Simmonds crossed, but it was not enough for the Chiefs to seal victory after stand-off Joe Simmonds missed three kicks at goal. ‘We threw everything at them but we couldn’t break them down,’ said Exeter assistant coach Ricky Pellow. ‘They must take great credit as they deserved to win by withstanding all our pressure. We are disappointed but the young players will learn a lot.’
