OLIVER SPOT ON AT EACH TWIST AND TURN

A PULSATING game with countless incidents was excellently refereed by Michael Oliver. He turned down soft penalty appeals for both teams but awarded the only clear one when Gael Clichy recklessly clattered into Roberto Firmino. The coming together of Raheem Sterling and James Milner (pictured) was very hard to decipher unless you had the benefit of several slow-motion replays. A great game is often hard to control, but most impressive was Oliver’s calm manner — even better when considering he was in charge at Chelsea v Manchester United on Monday and in Istanbul for Besiktas v Olympiacos on Thursday.
