David Tennant cashes in on Doctor Who seven years on

-

THE Broadchurch star david Tennant has never been abashed about nailing his political colours to the mast.

He lent his Caledonian voice to the Labour Party’s election videos in 2010 and 2015, and said he would vote for scottish independence in a second referendum.

so it’s intriguing to learn that the 45-year-old former doctor Who is to take the lead role in the Awesome Con — an exorbitantly priced convention for doctor Who fans this June in Washington DC.

Though it’s seven years since Tennant last graced the Tardis — with the exception of a one- off 50th anniversary special in 2013 — he is the event’s prize draw. Fans eager to meet him will be obliged to part with an otherworldly £320-a-head.

By contrast, those thirsting to meet Billie Piper, who starred as rose Tyler during Tennant’s incarnation as the tenth Timelord, or Catherine Tate (donna Noble) need fork out only £220 or £208 respectively.

The most ardent devotee may not be satisfied with anything other than the full package — the chance to meet Tennant, Piper, Tate and John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) for a stellar £580.

Tennant, whose narration for Labour’s 2015 video concluded with the observation that ‘ Britain succeeds when working people succeed’, is slated to appear on one day of the three-day convention.

Industry observers in the U.s. say that those who have played doctor Who are among the most sought after convention stars, with Matt smith — Tennant’s successor — reported to have trousered £ 200,000 per weekend at recent events. It seems Tennant, whose wedding to Georgia Moffett in 2011 was attended by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, has a soulmate in Lord Mandelson, who famously declared that he was ‘intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich’.
