AS the only son of Annie ryan, the sole surviving stewardess of the sinking of the SS City of Benares, I’m very disturbed that the name of this vessel is being used in a context which implies she was carrying British gold (Mail).

There is no substantiv­e informatio­n to prove that this was the case. references to other vessels omit their names, using the emotive sinking of the Benares to emphasise the as yet unproven claim that she was carrying gold.

of course there were ships that carried gold, some successful­ly and other not, but until such facts are proven incontrove­rtibly, there should be no speculatio­n. EDWARD J. R. SEVILLE,
