Is the Gibraltar row getting out of hand?
I WAS amazed at the media maintaining that Michael Howard had insinuated the UK should go to war with Spain over Gibraltar. I listened to his interview with Andrew Neil, and all I heard was that Britain stands by her protectorates. He said Mrs Thatcher went to war to protect the sovereignty of the Falkland Islanders and that Theresa May will stand up for Gibraltar. The media are going well over the top when reporting anything to do with leaving the EU. I voted Leave and don’t regret it. Let’s all get behind Mrs May and show the world how united and strong we are.
SUE ASHCOMBE-HURT,
Sandbach, Cheshire. AS A British subject living in Spain, I’m appalled at the tone of things being said about Gibraltar (Mail). Lord Howard should retract his inflammatory statements. As Mrs May has said about a new Scottish independence referendum, this is not the time. Nor is it time to count comparative arsenals of war. Spain would never attack Gibraltar as both countries are inextricably linked. This is definitely not the same as Argentina’s invasion of the Falklands. Why not designate Gibraltar as a living colonial museum, with neutral status, and request World Heritage status? Like Nick Clegg, I have a Spanish-born wife, but mine holds a British passport.

THERESA MAY should tell the sabre-rattling Spaniards that if they insist on threatening Gibraltar, air passenger tax to Spanish destinations will be raised to 20 per cent and holidays to Spain will attract a special tax. Then let’s see if the Spanish tourist trade survives.
