CHRIS WHEELER’S VERDICT

- Charles Sale

UK ATHLETICS are close to signing a long-term extension to their kit deal with nike that will have significant repercussions for track and field.

The agreement will see nike sign up until 2030, bringing further stability to uKA with yoghurt manufacturer Muller also coming on board in a showcase year, with the London stadium hosting the World Championships in August.

Part of the deal with nike would be a regular GB v usA meeting. however, uKA’s commitment to a nike tie-up is likely to kibosh the olympic trials being planned by the British olympic Association ahead of Tokyo 2020.

The BoA are backed by adidas and it will be almost impossible for uKA to sign up for a new event at which their athletes would be wearing the kit of nike’s arch rivals.

A BoA spokesman said there had been early talks with uKA about the trials in the knowledge that nike were their sponsors. TIM

HENMAN, who often gives the impression during punditry duties for the BBC at Wimbledon that he watches little or no tennis for the rest of the year, will have to ensure he knows the merits of those competing for 2017 Wimbledon wildcards. There will be a fierce spotlight on the picks, with Maria Sharapova — back after a drugs ban — in contention for one and Henman (right) chairs the committee making the selections. sPeCiAL tributes will be paid to departing assistant first-team coach steve holland and captain John Terry at the Chelsea FC Awards at the Battersea evolution on May 28. Chelsea were happy for holland to keep combining club duties with his role as no 2 to england boss Gareth southgate. And only one Premier League club had objected to holland continuing with his dual role . . . Tottenham, of course. ENGLAND Test captain and Sheffield United fan Joe Root has sent his congratulations to another century-maker in Blades manager Chris Wilder, whose team clocked up 100 points in League One this season. This follows Wilder’s Northampton racking up 99 last season in League Two.
