Cushty King win likely at Chester

- By SAM TURNER

In the immortal words of Del Trotter, you know it makes sense to back WHO

DARES WINS ( Chester, 3.35) to secure victory in today’s 188Bet Chester Cup. The Roodee feature has been a happy hunting ground for jump trainers in recent seasons and Alan King looks to have found a cushty opportunity for his five-year-old who was last seen running a blinder in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham festival.

It may have been a different discipline, but Who Dares Wins acquitted himself superbly at Prestbury Park, keeping on to take third behind Supasundae and Taquin Du Seuil.

The son of Jeremy may not have run on the level since last September, but he was impressive last July when rattling around to score handsomely. Although he is thus far unproven over this sort of trip on the Flat, it must surely be within his reach given he stays so well over hurdles.

King has already proved on a number of occasions how adept he is at training Flat winners and his representative looks well drawn to make an impact on this afternoon’s feature, while the decision to re-equip him with cheekpieces could be a shrewd one.

All-weather specialist Watersmeet may be a threat and could take some pegging back if allowed a free rein in front. But the likes of Blakeney Point and Sea Of Heaven look greater challengers, even if the latter has not been done any favours by his post position.

The preceding Boodles Diamond Handicap looks an excellent renewal and it is difficult to split both

EL ASTRONAUTE (Chester, 3.00) and Sir Maximilian as both have outstanding claims.

narrow preference is for the former who looks to have improved again from three to four years of age and he displayed great tenacity to score at newmarket on his reappearance.

Later on, STRADIVARIUS (Chester, 4.05) and GIN IN THE INN (Chester, 5.05) look two handicappers which appear capable of leaving behind their current marks.

The former won with authority at Beverley on his comeback, while the Pontefract victory recorded by Gin In The Inn was achieved in the style of a sprinter capable of making his mark at a higher level.
