Not so fast! Thief tries to grab bike off back of moving car

- By Ross Parker

THIS is the moment a brazen thief tried to steal a £2,200 racing bike clamped to the back of a car.

The hooded youth pounced after tailgating the car until it stopped at traffic lights.

He is seen making increasingly desperate attempts to free the bike before the driver pulls away. And even as the car picks up speed he has another go, before giving up and rushing back to grab his own bike from the middle of the road.

As he attempted to make his getaway another cyclist could be seen chasing the would-be thief. The dramatic footage, captured on the car’s rear-view dashcam, was taken on Tower Bridge Road in central London on Sunday afternoon.

The bike, which belongs to a 24-year-old cyclist named only as Musa, is a Mekk Primo – which sells for £2,200. Musa was being driven home by his girlfriend, Chloe, 24, after he had just finished a training ride.

She said: ‘He’d just finished 80 miles that day. We were driving down Tower Bridge Road when I noticed a guy cycling along behind me, I thought he was a bit close to the back of the car.

‘But I just thought he was being silly – because if I had to brake, then he was going to hit me. The next thing I knew, we were at the last set of lights before the dual carriageway, and I heard a beep from the car behind us.

‘That’s when I saw the cyclist twiddling the top fastening of the bike. Just then, the light went green so I started to accelerate.

‘He tried to chase us for quite a while before giving up.’

The couple handed the footage to the police and hope someone will be able to identify the youth.

Chloe believes the attempted theft was premeditated: ‘I think he’d been watching from somewhere – probably because he knew there were a lot of traffic lights and I’d probably have to stop.’

She added: ‘The focus for us is to try to catch the guy – but we also want to warn other cyclists and car owners to be vigilant.’
