Watch out for ...

-

ROBERT PATTINSON, pictured, who is compelling as a small-time robber in Good Time (by sibling film-makers Ben and Joshua Safdie), which was showing in competition at Cannes. It’s Pattinson’s best screen role to date, though I knew I had to start paying proper attention after seeing him in David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars and David Michod’s The Rover. It would be great to see him treading the boards in a raw new play by a homegrown playwright. He’s got the chops for it now.

ISABELLE HUPPERT, at her dangerous best in director Michael haneke’s startling film happy end, about a family in crisis. Keep your eye on huppert, and watch her observing everything . . . before striking like a snake. she deals with her recalcitrant son in the most vicious way — a brilliant moment that’s still playing in my head. The family’s behaviour reminded me at times of Lillian hellman’s play The Little Foxes.
