THE STORY BEHIND The No 1 Giant Pendant

- JENNY COAD

THAT LOOKS FAMILIAR: You might have seen it on Grand Designs. Designer Tom Raffield and his wife Danielle documented the creation of their innovative house in Cornish woodland, which featured the sculptural light pendant. Spot it at this week’s Chelsea Flower Show. IS IT WOOD? Yes. 80 metres of steambent wood. It’s woven, cooked and twisted by hand in their south Cornwall studio, so each pendant is unique. WHY NO.1? It was the first light Raffield designed. WHAT ELSE DOES HE MAKE? He unveiled the Gwenver Garden Room at Chelsea — and also makes furniture including a curvy log basket and shapely Arbor dining chair. CAN I BUY ONE? Of course. Pendants start from £165, tomraffield.com. The No.1 Giant Pendant starts from £575 and comes in ash, oak or walnut.
