Bankers snap up tickets for £112million lottery draw

- By Alex Ward

LAST night’s massive £112million EuroMillions jackpot seems to have attracted huge interest from Britain’s bankers.

Sales of £2.50 lottery tickets in the postcode areas for the City of London and Canary Wharf – home to the most elite bankers in the world – have grown by 48 per cent. That’s twice the rate of sales across the rest of the UK.

The last time a lottery prize exceeded £100million was in October 2016. But with odds of one in 139 million, City workers have resorted to buying multiple tickets to improve their chances of winning last night’s £112million jackpot.

Peter Wagg, the owner of the News of the Wharf shop at Canary Wharf, told the Financial Times: ‘Whenever the jackpot gets above £70million to £80million, that’s when we have to think about a range of additional staff to cover the store.

‘This is not the first mega lottery draw we’ve had. In the past, we’ve actually had to have security to organise a queuing system because the lines have gone out of the door.’

The £112million jackpot came after rolling over 11 times, week after week, from just £14million.
