-

ROCK pioneer Gregg Allman has died at the age of 69.

The co-founder of the Allman Brothers died at home in Savannah, Georgia, on Saturday, surrounded by loved ones.

Father-of-five Allman, who was previously married to singer Cher, found fame in the band he started with older brother Duane in the late 1960s. Duane was killed in a motorcycle crash in 1971. Gregg Allman, the lead singer and keyboardist, wrote several of the band’s biggest hits, including Whipping Post and Midnight Rider.

Among the Allman Brothers’ best-known songs is Jessica, which was used as the opening theme tune to Top Gear.

Allman’s manager Michael Lehman said the singer died of liver cancer. Cher said on Twitter: ‘I’ve tried. Words are impossible.’
