The university terror suspects
TERRORIST Salman Abedi funded preparations for his attack using thousands of pounds of taxpayer-funded student loans.
He started a business course at Salford University in October 2014 – collecting about £7,000 from the Student Loans Company – but dropped out after pocketing the money.
Money which may have been left over from the loan, along with welfare handouts, are believed to have been used to fund a trip to Libya. They are also thought to have gone towards the rent on a flat where the 22-year-old prepared his bomb. Zuhair Nassrat, 19, and two others arrested in the wake of last week’s atrocity are also students. Nassrat, who was arrested on Sunday, studies law at Chester University.
Meanwhile brothers Mohamed Werfalli, 20, and 22-year-old Yahya were held on Saturday. Mohamed is listed online as studying chemical engineering at Huddersfield University. His brother went to Manchester Metropolitan University.
