Fairy cast her spell on a lovestruck gull

-

MONDAY was bin day. A gull was trying to get into a neighbour’s bin. My husband pulled back the net curtain at the side window and exchanged glances with the gull. The bird got off the bin and hopped onto the roof of a car facing our front window. Something in our window attracted the gull’s attention, and it hopped onto the low wall and then onto the window ledge. My husband was watching the gull’s antics from behind the nets. The bird positioned itself in front of a fairy ornament that sits in our window. The fairy wears a pretty dress and has white wings. The gull started to peck at the window with its beak, hitting the spot exactly where the fairy is placed. Did he think, perhaps, he had found a friend? One wonders what birds actually see — they are so clever. Pat O’Connor, Blackpool.
