Senior star Langer still sparkling

nO OnE will ever take Jack nicklaus’s record of 18 majors now Tiger Woods has pulled up lame but, on a notable day on sunday for the over-50s circuit, his senior majors record of eight did fall to — who else? — Bernhard Langer.

One week after equalling the great man’s total, the indefatigable German passed him by beating Vijay singh down the stretch in a shootout to win the senior PGA Championship.

never mind that, at 59, he is five years older than the Fijian and 30 yards shorter off the tee. Or he can no longer use the anchored putting stroke he relied on for so long. In an interview with Sportsmail before the Masters, Langer said: ‘I always did love that English saying — where there’s a will, there’s a way.’

Once more he demonstrated sporting perfection as he coped better in the rain than his formidable rival and, as usual, holed the putts that mattered.

And here is an enticing thought: given the senior Open will be held in July at Royal Porthcawl, where he won by 13 strokes in 2014, the best might be yet to come.
