Tops the world rankings for the first time. 2000 Victory in the Open at St Andrews makes him only the fifth player to complete the career Grand Slam. 2001 Wins his second Green Jacket to become the first player to hold all four majors at the same time. 2004 Loses world No1 spot to Vijay Singh after a record 264 weeks. 2006 Wins his third Claret Jug just two months after the death of his father Earl. 2008 Returns from knee surgery to win his 14th and final major to date at the US Open. More surgery then ends his season.

… AND RAPID DECLINE

2009 Eight months later returns to action but after crashing his car into a fire hydrant in November details of his infidelity emerge. 2010 Admits to cheating on wife Elin Nordegren and attends a sex-addiction clinic. The couple divorce in August. Sponsors such as Gatorade, AT&T and General Motors cancel their endorsemen­t deals, costing Woods £17m.

2011 Slips to a career-low No58 and goes 107 weeks without a win.

2013 Reclaims the No1 spot in March, staying there until the following May.

2015 Struggles to regain his form after twice having back surgery and falls out of the top 100 for the first time since 1996.

2016 Drops out of the top 500 and is absent from all four majors.

2017 Plays just three rounds before needing more back surgery and yesterday was arrested for driving under the influence.
