A time to unite

I CAN only praise the way in which Andy Burnham, the new Mayor of Manchester, the police and community leaders reacted in trying to unify the communities of Manchester after the terrible terrorist attack.

This strength and resilience to defy the terrorists has been shown time and again in Britain.

It is comforting to see the efficient, unfailing bravery of our emergency services and to witness the display of humanity by people opening their homes, restaurants, hotels, and cabs — a great display of unity.

It is from these acts of kindness that we should draw strength. We should not allow a terrorist’s callous act to tear our communities apart.

We must stand together and show that we will not be divided. Pointing fingers at a particular community will only marginalise people, who will not then come forward to help the security services and will feel afraid of a backlash.

Yes, cracks are showing in our multicultural society, but we can overcome this by ensuring divisive forces fail to succeed.
