Is ‘townie’ Shona Sibary being unfair about life in the countryside?

-

LIKE Shona Sibary, we moved to Devon from ‘up country’ (Mail), but unlike her we have found the locals delightful, helpful and welcoming. It’s about the quality of life and enjoying what living on the coast has to offer; it’s not a question of having a Waitrose or a Wagamama nearby. We have many local artisan shops that sell a wonderful range of fresh food. Did Shona do research (as we did) before she moved about the facilities, climate and gorgeous properties in the area? Life doesn’t descend into abject boredom when holidaymakers go back after summer. I think the fact that her elder daughters have chosen to remain speaks for itself. JENNY KAIN, Bideford, Devon.

WE ALSO moved to the West Country and, as Shona Sibary says, nothing prepares you for the feeling of isolation or the depressing winters if you are used to city living. Because buses are few and far between, you have to drive everywhere. Village shops and post offices have disappeared, and with them, the sense of community. Those who wish to socialise are usually the incomers, and that doesn’t always go down well with the locals. I think Shona was very brave to admit to making a mistake, and despite her family being split up, she must feel a huge sense of relief to be back on home ground. Though a move to the country or coast works for lots of people, I truly believe some are meant to be city dwellers, me being one of them!

Name and address supplied. I MOVED to Devon in September with my wife and daughter, having lived in Kent for more than 30 years. After some initial regrets about leaving our family and friends, we have not looked back. Everyone was welcoming, friendly and helpful. There is a lot to do if you want to get involved, you get real value for money and the pace of life is less hectic. I would recommend moving to the county — but not too strongly in case too many might want to escape the overcrowded and polluted South-East. MARTIN HAVARD, Chulmleigh, Devon.
