Chanoine Vintage Champagne 2009, £20 (normally £30), Tesco PROPERLY good vintage champagnes for £20 are rarer than hen’s teeth so this is definitely worth picking up if you need a bottle of smart bubbly on standby. Elegantly rich with toasty citrus flavours.

WHITE WINE

Zalze Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2016, £8.69, Waitrose ZIPPY Chenin made from old bush vines on South Africa’s coast . Bright and sunny with lots of lime and a touch of honeysuckle. South Africa is producing some of the most exciting Chenin Blancs nowadays.

Spicy prawns.

RED WINE

Monteflores Reserve Malbec 2016, £11, M&S SUPER soft Argentine red made with its star grape, Malbec. This one has been aged in French oak barrels to give it more weight and flavour. Black cherry and a subtle smoky character. A great barbecue wine.

Sausages.

ROSE WINE

Baron Gassier Provence Rose 1.5l, £20, Sainsbury’s NOW that rose season is in full swing, it’s time to get the big guns out. This magnum is ideal, full of gentle redcurrant and fresh as a daisy. It’s a classic Provence cocktail, made from Syrah and Grenache.
