Anger at Court’s ‘lesbians’ jibe

- MATTHEW LAMBERT

MARGARET COURT, the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion, has caused more controversy by saying tennis is ‘full of lesbians’. The 74-year-old Christian pastor had earlier said she would not fly on Qantas ‘where possible’ in protest at the airline’s support of same-sex marriage. Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King have called for Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena, venue for the Australian Open, to be renamed. Players might boycott it next year.

LIGHTNING doesn’t strike twice? Tell that to French umpire Arnaud Gabas, who suffered a fractured eye socket when Canadian Denis Shapovalov unintentionally hit a ball at him during a Davis Cup tie. Luckily this time Dutchman Robin Haase’s wild backhand only hit him on the leg.

PREGNANT world No 2 Serena Williams was at Roland Garros yesterday to watch her big sister reach the third round. Venus later let slip that Serena is expecting a girl.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI handed out the first double bagel — or should that be croissant? — of the tournament to Canadian qualifier Francoise Abanda.

PETRA KVITOVA, who returned to the French Open just five months after being stabbed in her playing hand, lost to American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. ‘The fairytale ended,’ she said.
