Arthur Miller, playwright husband of Marilyn Monroe, was today found guilty of contempt of Congress in Washington. he had refused to give the names of Communist writers he had met in 1947. Now he faces a possible £357 fine and a year’s jail.

Sir FrANk Whittle (1907-1996). the inventor of the jet engine joined the rAF at 16 before becoming a fighter pilot. he patented his idea after the Air Ministry turned him down. When his company Power Jets was nationalis­ed, he gave up his shares and rights, insisting: ‘My belief is that a serving officer should not be in a position to benefit from his employment.’ eDWArD WooDWArD ( 1930- 2009). the actor, pictured, who starred in cult thriller the Wicker Man later played ex-spy robert McCall in itV drama the equalizer. throughout filming from 1986 to 1989 in Manhattan, he worked 18-hour shifts and lived on junk food and 100 cigarettes a day. on his return to the uk, he had a heart attack.
