Fresher, 18, hangs himself after ex finds another man

- By James Tozer

A UNIVERSITY fresher was found hanged just days into his course after discovering his ex-girlfriend had been with another man, an inquest heard.

Ed Cooper, 18, was a ‘genuine and amiable guy’ with ambitions to become a journalist.

The teenager, from Guiseley, near Leeds, had broken up with his girlfriend – referred to as Suzy – last summer before he started at Manchester Metropolitan University. On September 28, he came back from the pub in the early hours of the morning. He spoke to Suzy on the phone and heard a man’s voice in the background.

The event management student then sent a series of 5am texts to his father and appeared to be upset. He was found dead later that day.

Mr Cooper had 260 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for driving is 80mg. Recording a conclusion of misadventure at the Manchester inquest, the coroner said: ‘[Mr Cooper] received a message which upset him but I do not think he did this to take his own life.’ ÷ For confidential support, call the Samaritans on 116123, visit a local branch or go to www.samaritans.org
