Jim Carrey may face trial over lover’s death
JiM Carrey is set to face trial over the suicide of his ex-girlfriend after a judge indicated she was not yet ready to throw out a case brought by her family.
Cathriona White’s estranged husband and her mother are suing the actor, 55, claiming he provided the drugs used in the irish make-up artist’s suicide.
A judge at Los Angeles Superior Court indicated on Wednesday she would not throw out the case as requested by Raymond Boucher, Carrey’s lawyer. After the hearing, Mr Boucher said: ‘Mr Carrey loved Miss White dearly and so obviously it will be a very painful process for him.’
Miss White’s mother, Brigid Sweetman claims Carrey provided prescription drugs that her daughter overdosed on. her husband Mark Burton is suing the actor over claims he played a role in her death.
the 30-year-old, who had an on-off affair with Carrey for three years, was discovered dead at her Los Angeles home in September 2015 four days after she had broken up with the actor for a second time.
Along with pill bottles containing four powerful prescription medicines, she left a suicide note addressed to Carrey in which she said she was ‘broken-hearted’ after he split up with her.
A coroner recorded her death as suicide. it was reported that Carrey, who is famed for his roles in the Mask, the truman Show and Dumb and Dumber, texted Miss White the night before her death asking her about a bottle of prescription painkillers that had gone missing.
Mr Burton is suing Carrey over similar claims. he alleges the actor sent the text message about the missing painkillers as a cover.
Carrey denies all the allegations, with his lawyers describing them as ‘malicious’ and ‘predatory’.
Judge Deirdre hill said she would make her final ruling on Carrey’s motion to strike in due course but indicated she would side with the prosecution at least in part. She set a date for the trial to begin next April.
