£93m FOR GOING DOWN!

NEWCASTLE, Aston Villa and Norwich received £41million in parachute payments last season following relegation. The cash propelled Newcastle to the Championship title, but Norwich came eighth, and Villa 13th. Chelsea’s Premier League title earned them £151m. Manchester City were the second highest earners, with £147m, then Liverpool (£146m) and Tottenham (£145m). City and Liverpool earned more than Spurs despite finishing lower because they had more games televised. Meanwhile, Sunderland got a plum £93.5m for finishing bottom of the pile, but their games were rarely on TV.
