... and their voters ‘prefer May as PM’

-

A LABOUR candidate has admitted the party’s voters have more confidence in Theresa May as Prime Minister than Jeremy Corbyn.

Joan Ryan, Labour candidate in Enfield North, wrote to her constituents urging them to back her on June 8 despite their ‘misgivings’ about the Labour leader.

She also appeared to promise to try to replace Mr Corbyn with a new leadership that can ‘once again deserve your confidence’. In the campaign letter Miss Ryan, who had a majority of just 1,086 in 2015, wrote: ‘I know from speaking to people around here that many who have previously voted Labour are thinking hard this time because ... they have more confidence in Theresa May as Prime Minister than they would have in Jeremy Corbyn.’

But warning of Tory ‘cuts’, she added: ‘Whatever your misgivings about the Labour leadership, I hope that you will consider voting for me.’
