WHEN green-fingered John Philips proudly showed off his 14ft echium flower to the nation in the Mail last week, he was rightly confident that his might well have been the biggest bloom in Britain.

But hundreds of readers have sent us pictures to give the keen gardener from Ilfracombe, Devon, a run for his money.

Some are as high as his supersized specimen, which reached the height of a giraffe in just two years grown from seed, while others have reached unearthly heights of up to 20ft – the length of a killer whale.

after sifting through the impressive submissions from amateur gardeners hailing from locations ranging from the Cornish coast to suburban nottingham, today we can present some of the best.

Here our readers give their top tips for caring for these tropical plants – and you might be surprised by some of their suggestions.

Unfortunately, we were not able to include every submission – but keep your eyes peeled in case you see an even bigger bloom to trump these.

At 14ft, is this UK’s tallest garden f lower?
