Shoo-in Bercow dismays voters
THANKS to the country’s bizarre electoral system, the result in one constituency is already known.
A long- running convention dictates that the Commons Speaker is never challenged in his seat by rival main parties. This means John Bercow is guaranteed reelection as MP for Buckingham. What’s more, having said he’d only serve nine years as Speaker, the much-despised Bercow now says he may stay in the post until 2022.
No wonder some of his estimated 75,000 constituents have launched a protest, complaining that they have become disenfranchised.
