DROWNING in bad accents and worse singing, this adaptation of Louis de Bernieres’s novel fails to impart the book’s poetic force, leaving only the romance. Penelope Cruz is the Greek woman falling for a mandolinstrumming officer (Nicolas Cage, pictured with Cruz).
